Attorney Assistants (members of defense team)

On occasion the need may arise for an attorney to bring other members of the defense team to the jail when interviewing an inmate. These assistants may take the form of investigator, interpreter*, Para-legal, stenographer, etc.. In order for the assistant(s) to be allowed access with the attorney the following requirements must be met:

  1. The attorney must submit to the jail a signed letter on his or her letterhead that contains the following information:
    • Assistants name and function
    • Date of the visit
    • Attorney’s assurance that the assistant has no personal relationship to the inmate(s) being visited
    • Attorney’s signature
  2. The letter must be faxed to the attention of Chief of Security, 804-333-6029 at least one business day (Mon thru Fri) prior to the visit.
  3. The assistant must present a valid photo ID or drivers license at the time of the visit.

Due to space limitations we ask that the number of assistants be limited to those absolutely necessary for the visit.

* A letter will not be necessary for any interpreter listed in the Certified list for Virginia Courts. The interpreter should know if they are on the list or not.
